Humble Beginnings
Vasundhara, started off as an urban-development project around mid-nineties under the UP Housing & Development Board. Vasundhara, a large residential area, comprising several sectors and stretches adjoining Vaishali and Indirapuram.
In the year 1997, on a June summer evening, Bengali community personnel from all these areas gathered to decide on hosting Durga Puja, Kali Puja, and Saraswati Puja functions in Vasundhara. These skeletal crew of Bengalees took the initiative and with great leap of faith hosted the first ever Durga Puja in 1997 at the Community Hall, Sector 16, Vasundhara.
Since 1997, Durga Puja celebration in Vasundhara became a regular occurrence and it was felt that a Kali Mandir was the need of the hour for the thriving and ever-growing Bengali community of Vasundhara, Vaishali, and Indirapuram area. Thus, the idea took hold of establishing a Kali Temple that would fulfill the religious, cultural, and social needs of the residents.
Kali Temple
Finally, on 28th October 2008, some young, active and energetic persons gathered at the current temple spot in Sector 15 and established a makeshift Kali Temple. The initial construction was setup by tents, an iron cubicle became the home to Maa Kali. Later as more people came together and funds started coming in, the current Kali Temple began to took shape. The women took the initiative from visiting houses of Bengali families living in Vasundhara & Vaishali, to collect funds and spread the word of mouth of the temple. The “Durga Bahini”, fondly referred to this group of committed ladies, braved cold winter and hot scorching summers in the initial days and played a commendable role for the cause of Vasundhara Kalibari.
Formal Ceremony
Finally on 9th March 2011, the “Pran Prathistha” ceremony took place under the able priesthood of Dr. Mukul Bikash Mishra. Maa Kali was given the name of Vasundhareshwari and Baba Bholanath was given the name of Vasundhareshwar.
Today, Vasundhara Kali Bari is spread across a large area and is one-stop gathering place for Bengalis and Non-Bengalis for religious and social function. Each year, since 2008, the Kali Bari is hosting several festivals like Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja, Rabindra Jayanti, Holi Milan, along with monthly Purnima and Amavasya puja.
